There’s no
arguing that most of the electrical problems you face at home must be taken
care by a professional electrician. However, there are a few smaller problems
that you can easily and safely deal with. Here are some:-
Flickering Lights
Flickering
lights surely can be quiet bothersome and yet pretty easy to resolve. Start by
studying the bulb. Ensure it has been screwed properly. If that’s in order,
then check that its wattage is correct for the fixture in which it has been
screwed. In case the wattage is not right, it’s very much possible that this is
the reason behind overheating. This can also lead to onset of a fire. On the
other hand, if the wattage is correct, all you need to do is replace the old
bulb with a new one. If the bulb still flickers, then it’s possible that the
electric outlet itself has a problem.
Cord Inspection
Damaged or
frayed electrical cord is one such problem often overlooked. Check for any
exposed electrical wires from brakes or frayed wires. In case there are, it
means that the electrical wiring accessories are not working properly. Look for
brown spots or melting which are an indicator of short circuit. If you come
across a short, do not use the accessory anymore. Call for a professional
electrician and get it changed.
Electrical Outlets
If one outlet is
not working, check the functionality of the others around it. If even they are
not working, the chances are that your circuit breaker has tripped or there’s
no power in the accessory. Examine the circuit breaker to ensure that all the
breakers are placed on their respective places and if one has switched off,
simply turn it on. In case even this doesn’t work, it is time that you seek the
assistance of a professional electrician.
Tripped Circuit Breaker
Generally, when
the electricity goes off or the electrical outlet stops operating, you will
notice that the circuit breaker has tripped and automatically switched off.
When you turn it on again, it will go back to performing normally. However, in
case it turns off on its own, it surely means there’s an overload.
Overload circuit
breakers can become hazardous as they can overhead. The best way to avoid any
complications is by switching off all the electrical appliances and then turn
the accessory on to see whether the problem has resolved or not. It is also
essential not to plug in too many appliances to electrical wiring accessories
and always turn off the appliances when not on use.
